2013 International Consensus Meeting (ICM) modified Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) consensus-based criteria for the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI).

Diagnosis of PJI (knees and hips)
1. Two positive periprosthetic cultures with phenotypically identical organisms, or
2. A sinus tract communicates with the joint, or
3. Having three of the following minor criteria: Elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP): more than 10 mg/L AND erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR): more than 30 mm/h Elevated synovial fluid white blood cell (WBC) count: more than 3000 cells/μL OR ++ change on leukocyte esterase test strip Elevated synovial fluid polymorphonuclear neutrophil percentage (PMN%) more than 80% Positive histology of periprosthetic tissue One positive culture
