Earlier this summer, Andreas F. Mavrogenis and Jacques H. Caton, Editors-in-Chief of SICOT-J, together with Isabelle Auffret Babak, Senior Editor, EDP Sciences, took the time to write a gem of an editorial with the title “Writing for SICOT-J”. Now that the academic year is well underway, this is a good moment to consider the editorial, the issues it addresses and the help it can offer to prospective authors. Indeed, the invaluable tips on medical writing could apply to any author and any journal.
Dr. Mavrogenis and Dr. Caton were inspired to write the editorial in recognition of the amount of work it takes to write and submit an article and the special considerations which apply to medical writing; “…it should be formal, accurate and up-to-date, unbiased, easy to understand, ethical, should not confuse reading, and adhere to high-quality principles and guidelines.” The writing tips touch on the following areas:
Outline
Instructions to authors
Literature review
Authorship issues
Abstract
Topic
Type of study
Type of writing
Invited papers
Submission (cover) letter to the editor
“This editorial note offers useful advice for the authors submitting their papers to a journal on what to keep in mind before submission, how to prepare a quality submission, how to win the editor for their paper to avoid rejection, and how to make it to the review process and maybe to get published.” If you have an article in preparation, it is well worth taking a few minutes to read the editorial to discover the likes and dislikes of the Editors-in-Chief and to maximise your chances of successful publication.
SICOT-J is the official, peer-reviewed, open access journal of the Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT) whose members enjoy a 30% discount for publishing in the journal. It was launched in 2014 and is already indexed in Scopus. It recently received a Journal Citation Indicator and the DOAJ Seal for demonstrating “best practice in open access publishing”. A lot of work has been done recently to develop the journal including updating the instructions to authors and improving the structure of the Editorial Board.
If you are interested in submitting to SICOT-J, please read the instructions for authors. You can also sign up for free email-alerts to stay up to date with new articles. SICOT-J news is available here.
